We are pleased to announce the publication of a volume of conference proceedings, now available online with Open Access as Volume 340 of Studies in Health Technology and Informatics.

The volume is dedicated exclusively to contributions submitted to ISCB GMDS 2026 and accepted for inclusion in the conference program. The published contributions reflect the breadth of current research in medical informatics and medical data science and will be presented at the conference as oral or poster presentations, providing the basis for scientific exchange and discussion during ISCB GMDS 2026.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the ISCB GMDS 2026 full papers in GMS Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (MIBE).
The collection comprises six full papers presented at ISCB GMDS 2026 and reflects a range of current research topics represented at the conference.

Biometrical Journal will publish a special issue on the occasion of the 47th Annual Conference of the International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (ISCB), jointly held with the 71st Annual Conference of the German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) in Freiburg, Germany, from 27 September to 1 October 2026, under the conference theme:

BIG DATA, small data, Your Data – Transitions in the age of biomedical AI

This special issue aims to publish, high-quality papers on cutting-edge biostatistical, epidemiological, and health data science methods for biomedical and clinical research presented at ISCB GMDS 2026. In keeping with the interdisciplinary character of the joint conference, contributions that bridge biostatistics, epidemiology, medical informatics, and biomedical data science are particularly encouraged, including work examining how established statistical principles and emerging AI methodology can inform one another.

Papers on any topic covered by the conference may be submitted to the Special Issue, given that they been presented at ISCB GMDS 2026, orally or as a poster. Papers in the following areas are particularly encouraged, especially when connecting two or more of these areas:

• Design and analysis of interventional
• Causal inference and real-world data
• Survival analysis, multi-state modeling, and other time-to-event methods
• Longitudinal data and joint models
• Missing data and measurement error
• Evidence synthesis and meta-analysis
• Prediction modelling
• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and large language models in biomedical and clinical research
• Synthetic data and simulation
• Electronic health records, registries, and biomedical data integration
• Statistical and methodological aspects of image and signal processing
• Reproducibility, validation, fairness, and evaluation of biomedical AI

The review process will follow the general reviewing principles of Biometrical Journal. The Special Issue guest editors are Nadine Binder, Harald Binder, Stefan Michiels, Adriani Nikolakopoulou, André Scherag, Stephen Senn, Doranne Thomassen, Frank Ueckert, and Diane Uschner.

Details on the submission process will be circulated as soon as possible. Submitted manuscripts should comply with the instructions for authors of Biometrical Journal.

The deadline for submitting papers is 15 March 2027. This will be a sharp deadline.

We expect that all submitted papers will receive their first review during 2027 and that the Special Issue will be published thereafter.

Please note that Biometrical Journal has implemented a Reproducible Research (RR) audit, taking place after the peer-review process has been completed and conditional acceptance granted. Authors will be asked to submit statistical code, original data sets where possible, and details of simulations. Statistical code should be uploaded as “ready to run” material so that it can be examined as part of the RR audit for this Special Issue.
