Transitions in the age of biomedical AI
Signature-Session: AI and Me
How does musical improvisation take shape when humans and AI listen, respond and make musical decisions together?
In this performative research format, double bassist Jonas Gerigk improvises together with SOMAX2, an AI system for musical interaction developed at IRCAM. SOMAX2 analyzes the musical performance in real time, identifies musical connections within previously learned sonic material and generates its own musical responses.
The performance opens an improvised dialogue between human and AI, inviting the audience to experience their musical relationships. It is followed by an open discussion in which questions and observations from the audience are warmly encouraged. The exchange flows directly into a final improvised performance, where the shared reflections become the starting point for new musical decisions.

Jonas Gerigk is a double bass player pursuing a binational PhD in Artistic Research at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg in cooperation with the Hochschule Luzern – Musik (HSLU M). His research investigates how a personal musical vocabulary is cultivated through long-term improvisational practice.
One case study explores this line of inquiry through musical interaction between humans and artificial intelligence and asks how improvised encounters with artificial intelligence can open new perspectives on musical listening, decision-making and practice.
