Get Ready for ISCB GMDS 2026 in Freiburg!

We’ve put together some useful information, links and tips to help you prepare for ISCB GMDS 2026 and to make your time in Freiburg as easy and enjoyable as possible. We hope you’re looking forward to Freiburg, the conference and, of course, meeting the ISCB GMDS 2026 community!

Travel

Packing for Freiburg

  • We don’t have an official dress code, but business casual is encouraged.
  • Late September in Freiburg usually brings mild autumn weather, with pleasant temperatures during the day and cooler mornings and evenings. As the weather can be changeable, we would recommend to pack layers, especially if you are planning to partake in outdoor activities.
  • If you are traveling to Germany with prescription medication, please check the regulations in advance, as certain medicines may require additional documentation. See the official Federal Ministry of Health (Germany) information for details (website in German, but can be translated to English with with Chrome, Edge, or Firefox browser).

Pre-Arrival Documentation

  • EU citizens can travel to Germany without a visa. A valid ID card or passport is sufficient.
  • Non-EU citizens may require a visa or other entry requirements, depending on their nationality and the length and purpose of their stay.
  • Please check our Practical Information page to access official government links or directly go to Visas for Germany from the Federal Foreign Office to make sure you have the required documents.
  • We recommend bringing your conference registration confirmation, accommodation details and any relevant invitation or visa documents with you when traveling.

Inbound Travel Instructions

Our main Venue is the Konzerthaus Freiburg, at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1, 79098 Freiburg im Breisgau.

  • The Konzerthaus is located close to the city center of Freiburg
  • Freiburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) is directly across from the Konzerthaus and can easily be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
  • The venue is also very well connected by public transport. The nearest tram stops are Stadttheater (tram lines 1–5) and Hauptbahnhof (tram lines 1–4), both just a short walk from the Konzerthaus.

Stuttgart Airport (STR) Train: Take the public transport, e.g. the U6 from the airport to Stuttgart Hbf, then continue by train to Freiburg Hbf.
Alternatively, FlixBus operates direct connections from Stuttgart Airport to Freiburg Hbf.

Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg EuroAirport (BSL, EAP, MLH) Bus: Take the direct Bus Freiburger Reisedienst from the airport Basel to Freiburg HBf
We recommend taking this bus departig from the “French sector). It leaves hourly and tickets can be bought online or in the bus. The train connection from Euroairport to Freiburg requires changing multiple times.

Strasbourg Airport (SXB) Train: Take the airport shuttle train to Strasbourg, then continue by train via Offenburg to Freiburg Hbf.
Alternatively, FlixBus operates connections from Strasbourg to Freiburg.

  • Deutsche Bahn (DB): We recommend checking your connection and live travel updates via the DB website or DB Navigator app. Please note that delays, cancellations and changes can occur, so check your connection
    shortly before departure for the latest information.

Travel in Freiburg

  • Public transport in Freiburg is operated by VAG
  • Trams are the most commonly used form of public transport in Freiburg, with lines 1–5 providing connections across the city; all five lines stop at either Stadttheater or Hauptbahnhof, both just a short walk from the Konzerthaus.
  • Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines on board the tram or via the VAG app
  • Freiburg, the “Green City”, offers the perfect infrastructure for cyclists. For a truly sustainable stay in Freiburg, rent a bike with Frelo.

Access and Identification

  • Please keep your badge visible at all times, as it acts as your conference ID.
  • You will need your badge to access all registered activities. Without it, you won’t be admitted to the venue, pre-conference courses, or social events.

Information, Schedule, and Conduct

Info Desk

  • The desk will be open daily from Sunday, September 27 to Thursday, October 1, offering assistance with inquiries, lost and found, and general guidance.

Conference App

  • Instructions for download and your personal schedule here.
  • Important information and reminders during the conference will be delivered via push notifications through the official app.
  • We recommend enabling notifications and checking the app regularly throughout the event.

Pocket Guide

  • There will be pocket guides with practical information and the conference schedule available at the venue during the conference.

  • Will be available for download as PDF on our website soon!

Punctuality and Safety

  • Arrive on time for sessions, courses, workshops, and social activities.
  • Standing nearny entrance doors is prohibited due to fire safety regulations.
